Red Clover (Trifolium pratense)

Common perennial reaching 60cm/2′ high and wide with pinkish/red flowers. Prefers a sunny position and poor, well-drained soil.

Red clover has a long history as a medicinal plant. It is known as a blood cleanser and is often combined with other purifying herbs such as Burdock (Arctium lappa) to aid relief of skin conditions. It is often used to help balance hormone levels during menopause and relieve symptoms such as hot flushes.

Flower heads are harvested in early summer when they are newly opened. They can be dried and used as a tea.

Red clover is also an important nitrogen-fixing plant and great for attracting bees. The young shoots can also be eaten in spring.
