Biennial growing to 1.5m/5ft high with pink to mauve flowers in summer.

The young leaves and shoots of the Common Mallow are thought to have been eaten since at least the 8th century.  They are a nice addition to salads.

Flowers and leaves are a good emollient for sensitive areas of skin.  It can be applied as a poultice to help reduce swelling and draw out toxins.  Taken internally, the leaves can help ease gut irritation and are a laxative.  When combined with eucalyptus, Common Mallow makes a good remedy for coughs and other chest ailments.
