Tulsi / Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum)

An aromatic annual originating from India, growing to about 70cm/28” high with small, purple-red or white flowers. Requires sheltered, sunny position with well-drained soil. Does well under glass or on sunny windowsill.
In Ayurvedic medicine it is chiefly used to help reduce fevers. The aerial parts of the plant are picked just before flowering in early summer. A decoction is used for fevers and as a tonic to help improve vitality and for respiratory conditions. The juice can be used on skin infections and to help treat bites and stings. As a powder or juice, Tulsi can be applied to help heal mouth ulcers.
