Saltbush /Tree Purslane (Atriplex halimus)

An evergreen shrub growing to 2m.  It is in leaf all year and flowers in July.  Prefers a sunny position – it will get very leggy if grown in the shade.  Can cope with poor soil but prefers well-drained.  Is fine with maritime exposure.

Edible leaves throughout the year, although more sparsely through the winter months.  These can be eaten both raw and cooked and retains its salty flavour on cooking.  A great addition to salads or used as a spinach substitute.
