Herbaceous perennial belonging to the Asteraceae family. Growing to 0.6 m (2ft) by 0.4 m (1ft 4in). Unfussy about soil conditions – can tolerate poor, rocky, or clay soil and maritime exposure. Also known as European goldenrod or woundwort. Flowering from July to October. Leaves and flowers harvested late summer for medicine.
A bitter and astringent herb, helps reduce inflammation and has antiseptic properties which combined make it a useful in treating ailments such as cystitis.
Attracts various beneficial insects such as ladybirds, lacewings and hoverflies.
