Vegetable Mallow (Malva verticillata v. crispa)

£3.50

A great edible plant. Produces large, frilled leaves with pleasant, mild flavour. A great alternative to spinach. The seeds can also be eaten and have a pleasant nutty taste.
Other major uses of mallow are as a tea for dry cough and sore throats, or as a topical, gelatinous application for dermatitis. Mallow is also used for treating renal disorders, retention of fluids, diarrhoea and frequent thirst. The leaves and stems have digestive properties.
Tolerates both shade and sun but likes a moist, well-drained soil. It is not frost tender. Flowers July to September and seeds from August to October.
Related to the marshmallow and hibiscus plants.
