Common Valerian (Valeriana officinalis)

A tall, spreading, hardy perennial reaching 1.5m/5ft high with tiny, clustered and scented pink flowers from early summer.  Tolerant of most soils but does prefer a slightly moist, semi-shaded position.

Valerian root is used medicinally as a sedative, nervine and painkiller.  It is thought to be a useful aid in the relief of insomnia.

A wonderful plant for attracting butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects.
